Some writers can work on their novels in noisy cafes or with screaming children running around. I’ve known people who focus better while also watching a movie or tv show.

Not me! Complete and utter silence is preferable, though I tolerate the humming refrigerator and A/C. Lucky for me, I live alone. (Trust me, it’s best for everyone involved!)

Knowing yourself is the first step to being a productive writer, and how you handle distractions is an important part of that. If ambient sounds, bright lights, and that scratchy sweater you’re wearing won’t allow you to focus, do what you can to control your environment.

  • I splurged on high-end ear buds (Apple Airpods Pro) with noise cancellation. My cheap earbuds weren’t comfortable, nor were my headphones. I love the Airpods!
  • I have defender noise protection earmuffs to wear alone or over the earbuds. Not very comfortable, but they block sound really well, and I like that they say to people, “Don’t talk to me!”
  • I’m more careful about the clothing I buy. I can’t prove it, but I think I focus better in soft, comfy pants and knit top than in binding, itchy clothes. And cut off those tags!
  • I have smart lights at home that I can dim if needed. Out in the world, I’ve learned to always have sunglasses with me.

I recognize that not everyone has the luxury of these solutions, but if you have sensory issues, doing whatever you can to minimize sensory distractions may be extremely helpful.
